Tom Hardy for Esquire UK

Tom is also featuring in the cover of Esquire UK‘s new issue with a completely different photoshoot and interview. The pretty photoshoot was made by Greg Williams and you can check it in high quality on our gallery:

001.jpg 002.jpg 004.jpg 001.jpg

We’re in southwest London, where Hardy lives with his wife, the actress Charlotte Riley, and their toddler, because he has just returned from near back-to-back shooting of two very typically Hardian projects: Fonzo, an independent movie written and directed by Josh Trank about the last few months of the life of Al Capone (Hardy twist: he’s suffering from dementia brought on by syphilis) and Venom, the film with which Sony plans to launch its major foray into the world of Marvel, and in which he plays a street-wise journalist who gets possessed by an alien parasite (Hardy twist: the alien eats people; his journalist host doesn’t necessarily mind).

The films serve as exemplars of the kinds of projects Hardy likes to do, and the kinds of projects others want him for: gnarly, eccentric character studies of so-called tough guys, which he’s very good at — Charles Bronson in Bronson; the Kray Twins in Legend, treacherous fur trapper John Fitzgerald in The Revenant — and roles in absolutely enormous studio movies with the potential to make absolutely enormous amounts of money, at which he’s also proving pretty proficient — Bane in The Dark Knight Rises; Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road; the doomed Spitfire pilot in Dunkirk.

Now that Hardy is home, he’s spending as much time as possible with his children — he has a 10-year-old son, Louis, from an earlier relationship, who also lives nearby — and, as he says, not unhappily, as we drive to Pets at Home in a red estate he’s been loaned by Audi, “I’m covered in gravy and chocolate and snot.”

Tom Hardy for Esquire USA

Venom premieres in two months but we’ve already been graced with a new interview and photoshoot for Esquire USA’s September Issue. Check it below:

001.jpg 002.jpg 003.jpg 004.jpg

We’re at the first stop on Tom Hardy’s literal tour down memory lane, and he’s already causing trouble. The caretaker of St. Leonard’s Court, an apartment building in the leafy London suburb of East Sheen, comes out to the driveway to say that a tenant has lodged a noise complaint. Hardy leans back in the saddle of the offending source, a Triumph Thruxton fitted with a not-so-subtle 1200cc engine. “Must be hard for someone who’s home at 3:00 p.m. on a Tuesday doing fuck-all, innit?” he says to the caretaker, who’s already in retreat. Then, overriding his knee-jerk snark: “It won’t happen again.”

“I’m the youngest person to own a flat on this block,” Hardy, forty, tells me, sounding both proud and bemused. He bought the place fifteen years ago, moved out six years later, and now uses it as a crash pad for out-of-town guests. He didn’t choose the location for its social scene, if the few geriatric residents shuffling by are any indication. Rather, he was the prodigal son returned: He grew up in the upper-middle-class community, the only child of Chips, an adman and writer, and Ann, an artist. His parents still live nearby.

“Ready for the five-dollar tour?” he asks. Our plan is to trace the path from what he calls his “privileged bourgeois background” to the upper-upper-class town of Richmond, where he now lives with his wife, actor Charlotte Riley, and their child, his second. (He also has a ten-year-old son with assistant director Rachael Speed.) The journey is short in distance—a little more than two miles—but ultramarathon-long in life experience.

Coverage: San Diego Comic-Con International 2018

Sony headed up to SDCC to preview its upcoming movies, including Venom! This engaging panel featured cast discussion and an exclusive trailer. The panel, which marked the Tom’s first time in the Hall H, was moderated by Jessica Chobot and Tom was there alongside his co-star Riz Ahmed and director Ruben Fleischer.

During the panel, director Ruben Fleischer hinted a possible sequel for the movie, saying “We’re definitely planning a huge world with this Venom story.” The panel also addressed the spider-shaped elephant in the room during the closing moments. With Venom’s origin inextricably linked to Peter Parker in the comics, is there any chance we could see Tom Holland’s web-slinger on screen again this September?

“I think we an all agree it would be pretty amazing to see Spider-Man and Venom face off in a film,” said Fleischer, confirming or denying nothing. “I have to think the studio’s thinking the same way and, at some point down the road, they’re going to run across each other’s paths.” Tom Hardy was then asked if he’d like to fight Spider-Man, a question he answered amusingly literally, “What, go toe-to-toe with Tom Holland? I’ll have a go, yeah. You’ve got to have a go, ain’t yah.”

Fun fact: Tom is also voicing Venom.
